Film is available in thicknesses from one mil up to 20 mils. Because Fluoro-Plastics uses the most modern skiving technology, interim thicknesses are available. Film comes in rolls packaged on a three-inch cardboard core or PVC core from less than one inch wide up to 60 inches wide. Thin film is widely used in the wire and cable industry as wrap due to its extraordinary insulating ability. Some specialty PTFE resins can be made into thin film with a breakdown voltage exceeding 2000 volts per mil. Thin film is also found in capacitors because of its excellent dielectric properties. In addition, thin film can be used in applications where contamination is an issue, e.g. in many pharmaceutical and food processing applications. This product conforms to ASTM D 3308.
Modified PTFE is a special formulation of granular PTFE. It can be welded. For example, a single sheet of one foot square thin gauge modified PTFE can be folded back on itself and the edges welded together on two sides to form a PTFE bag for environmental sampling packaging, and other packaging where contamination is an issue. Modified PTFE is harder than ordinary PTFE, so it can be machined more easily; modified PTFE machined parts resist wear better than standard PTFE parts. Modified PTFE can be calendared in thin sections to create a nearly optically clear fiuoropolymer film with the other desirable characteristics of PTFE (inert, wide temperature operating range, great insulating characteristics, resists permeation, non-toxic and non-contaminating, and nothing sticks to it).
